How to choose the right CPAP machine

Starting CPAP therapy is a significant step, and choosing the right machine makes a real difference to how quickly you adapt and how comfortable your therapy feels. The good news is that modern CPAP machines are quieter, smarter and more comfortable than ever — and as a mySleep patient, you have access to clinical guidance to help you select the best fit for your prescription and lifestyle.

Most newly diagnosed patients are prescribed an auto pressure CPAP machine (also called an APAP machine). Unlike fixed pressure devices, auto machines continuously monitor your breathing and adjust pressure breath by breath throughout the night — which tends to be more comfortable, particularly in the early weeks of therapy when you're still adjusting. Fixed pressure machines are prescribed less commonly and are typically recommended where a stable, clinician-set pressure is required.

If you travel regularly, a travel CPAP machine may suit your lifestyle — compact enough for carry-on luggage and often compatible with universal voltage. For patients with more complex sleep apnea or breathing conditions, a BiLevel (BiPAP) machine may be prescribed by your sleep specialist, as these deliver different pressures for inhalation and exhalation.

All machines listed here are supplied by mySleep's clinical team and carry full Australian warranties. You'll also find a range of CPAP masks to complete your setup — or browse our bundled packages for a convenient all-in-one option.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a prescription to buy a CPAP machine in Australia?

Yes. A prescription — or a letter of diagnosis from your sleep specialist or GP — is required to purchase a CPAP machine in Australia. If you've completed a sleep study through mySleep, your clinician can advise on the appropriate machine and pressure settings as part of your treatment plan. For more information on your treatment options, visit our sleep apnea treatment options page.

What's the difference between a CPAP, APAP and BiPAP machine?

A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine delivers air at a single, fixed pressure all night. An APAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure) machine adjusts that pressure automatically in response to your breathing — making it the most commonly prescribed option for obstructive sleep apnea. A BiPAP (Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure) machine delivers two different pressures — one for breathing in and a lower one for breathing out — and is typically prescribed for more complex cases or where higher pressures are needed.

How long does a CPAP machine last?

Most CPAP machines are designed to last five or more years with proper care. Consumable parts such as filters, tubing and humidifier chambers need to be replaced more regularly to maintain hygiene and therapy performance. See our CPAP replacement schedule for a full breakdown of what to replace and when. When it's time to upgrade, our clinicians can help you select a current model that suits your needs and prescription.
